10 cattle die as live HT wire falls in Leh village

LEH, Sept 12:  Ten cattle were killed when  live high tension wires fell on them  after  an old and rotten wooden pole collapsed at village Matho in district Leh  last evening.
Sources said that HT line which pass through residential area of Nilabuk Muhalla of Matho village has been supported with the wooden poles.  Many such poles have  turned rotten with the passage of time but the concerned PDD authorities did not bother despite public request to replace them.    As the pole collapsed, the live cables fell on the cattle and at least ten animals were electrocuted.   The villagers of the area have demanded compensation for the cattle as their live stock is the mainstay of their livelihood.
Meanwhile,  Councilor Jamyang Tsering Namgyal from Martselang, in a letter flashed to Chairman/ CEC  Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council demanded compensation for the farmers whose cattle were killed, shifting of HT line outside the village and action against the erring PDD employees. He said there is strong anger among the villagers and a team of Veterinary doctors, Police  and Revenue official should also be deputed to the village.   He claimed that AEE concerned claiming that pole has been fallen due to push by cattle but it is also matter of concern that why so weak and rotten poles were  allowed to be erected and not replaced for the safety of the public and its live stock.
