12 cops among 20 injured

Srinagar, Feb 12: At least 20 people including 12 cops were injured in clashes between protesters and police in Kupwara district of north Kashmir against the death of a local man allegedly in police custody. The protesters also attacked several Government offices as well as an office of a pro-India political party and torched a Police Langar.
The death of murder accused Nazir Ahmad Mughal son of Abdul Rehman, an adopted son of Bahadur Khan aged 32 years of Gujjar Pati, Zirhama, Kupwara sparked violent protests in Kupwara town and its adjoining areas.
The town and its adjoining areas observed shutdown today and protesters pelted stones on police at Bye-pass Road, Kupwara Bridge, DC office, SP office and Aawura.
The protesters attacked the offices of Deputy Commissioner and SP Kupwara. Protesters at Aawura attacked a police post and torched police’s Langar. Police fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters. Three protesters were injured at Aawura. At Zirhama, protesters attempted to torch a police post.
The protesters ransacked the office of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Bye-pass in the district and damage the property. They also burnt the party flags.
At least 12 policemen including a DySp and Additional SP were injured in the clashes.
A police spokesman said here that in different stone pelting incidents in Kupwara 15 police and CRPF men were injured. “The miscreants pelted stones on the deployments at some places in the town including the Cement bridge and in Trehgam”, he added.
The spokesman said: “At Awoora the miscreants tried to set a shed used for kitchen on fire. The miscreants also damaged an office. The deployments exercised restraint while tackling the stone pelters. The miscreants after pelting stones would take shelter in private and public establishments. However, the situation is completely under control.”
