JAMMU, May 15: For the first time, a dozen children of Deaf & Dumb School, Jammu appeared in 12th Class examination conducted by J&K Board of School Education and out them, four were declared passed.
Not only this, a girl student- Neha Sharma, daughter of Gopal Krishan, resident of Raipur (Bhalwal) in district Jammu, obtained Ist division ( 320/500) in Higher Secondary exam, the result of which was declared two days back.
Three other children declared passed in the examination are-Shafali Manhas from Ploura, Jyoti Devi from Kheri (Gharota) and Shafalika Sharma from Billawar.
The only school in the State for these children, is being run by an NGO- J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra, at Shahidi Chowk in Jammu under the guidance of noted social activist- Roshan Lal Bhan. On the basis of donations, the NGO is running this school. The State Government has not yet taken a decision for the welfare of these deaf and dumb children and opening a school for them despite the fact that Minister incharge School Education (DyCM) Tara Chand on the question of Mohd Yousuf Tarigami (MLA) had claimed in the Legislative Assembly last year to open such two schools at Srinagar and Jammu with hostel facilities but noting on the ground has been seen so far.
The parents of these children told the Excelsior that they have given many representations to the Chief Minister, Governor N N Vohra and School Education Minister but Government’s discriminatory attitude towards these children is unfortunate and strange. They regretted that Disability Act is not being properly implemented by Social Welfare Department/ State Government in the State.
