Highest single day spike in COVID cases

Srinagar, May 16: In the highest single day spike in Coronavirus positive cases in Kashmir, 12 pregnant women and a 70-year old man who died in SKIMS today were among 61 people who tested positive in the Valley taking the number of positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 1121 while Corona death toll is now 12.

A 70-year-old man from Budgam today died at SKIMS Soura and he later tested positive in the evening taking the COVID-19 deaths in Jammu and Kashmir to 12.
Medical Superintendent SKIMS, Professor Farooq Jan, told Excelsior that the man had suffered heart attack and was reported to Casualty section late last night and died this morning. He said that he had chest ailment also and his sample was taken and it tested positive this evening”.
The body was kept in mortuary and has been handed over to the family after completing formalities as per COVID-19 protocol. The 70-year old man was a resident of Buchru Chadoora in Budgam district.
The Srinagar district has reported 4 of the deaths, highest in any district, followed by 3 in Baramulla and one each in Bandipora, Anantnag, Budgam, Udhampur and Jammu.
With today’s cases, the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir is now 1121 with 989 in Kashmir.. The total number of active positive cases is 567 with 497 in Kashmir. So far 542 people have recovered including 482 in Kashmir while 12 persons died so far.
Dr Farooq Jan told Excelsior that 37 tested positive at SKIMS Pathology Lab today including 12 from Kupwara, 3 from Anantnag and one each from Baramulla and Budgam.
The positive cases from Kupwara Include 8-year-old girl, 24-year-old, 29-year-old, 36-year-old, 38-year-old, 48-year-old and 61-year-old women from Gonipora Handwara, three men aged 25, 28 and 43 years besides 19-year-old man from Warpora and 40-year-old man from Kralpora in district Kupwara.
The three persons whose samples were collected at DH Anantnag tested positive at SKIMS include 25-year-old man from Damhal, 26-year-old man from Anantnag, and 32-year-old man from Kunzer Baramulla, all with travel history of Bhopal. The Baramulla case is a 55-year-old man while Budgam cases is a 70-year-old from Chadoora who died at SKIMS.
The Nodal officer Government Medical College Srinagar, Dr Salim Khan, told Excelsior that 1002 samples were tested at CD hospital’s Covid-19 laboratory and 17 persons tested positive. He said that 658 more samples were received and reports of 100 samples are under process.
Dr Salim said that among the 17 new cases, 14 including 12 pregnant ladies belong to Anantnag district while as 3 including a 6 month old male baby belong to Kulgam district.
The 12 pregnant woman include a 26 year old from Gutligund, 30 year old from Imooh, 22 year old from Zaadipora Khanbal, 27 year old from Sombron Achabal, 21-year-old from Telwani Achabal, 30 year old from Oodsoo Anantnag, 21 year old from Toosu Anantnag, 35 year old from Munward Anantnag, 25 year old from Brenti Dailgam, 23 year old from Achabal, 22 year old from CS Pora Anantnag and 25 year old from Gandoora Verinag.
The others include 26 year old lady from Kanganbal Achabal, 58 year old man from Mominabad Ashajipora who has travel history of Delhi besides six month old male baby from Khurbat Pora Kulgam, 25 year old man from Narsingpora Kulgam and 21 year old woman from Pahloo Kulgam.
Nineteen people including 18 from Kashmir’s Kulgam district tested positive at Northern Army Headquarters hospital laboratory in Udhampur. And nine people from Kashmir tested positive at a private laboratory today.
Meanwhile, 26 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and were discharged from various hospitals, in Kashmir today.
Anantnag has now 162 cases, Srinagar 156, Bandipora 135, Baramulla 118, Shopian 107, Kupwara 97, Budgam 57, Ganderbal 23, Kulgam 119 and Pulwama 15.
So far 109092 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 29243 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by Government, 107 in hospital quarantine, 567 in hospital isolation and 14114 under home surveillance. Besides, 65049 persons have completed their surveillance period.
