12 quintals sub-standard sweets, 240 kg suspicious ‘khoya’ destroyed by DFCO

JAMMU, Nov 11: In view of Diwali and other upcoming festivals, Food Safety wing of Drug and Food Control Organization (DFCO) today inspected several food establishments, especially sweets shops in city as well as rural areas and destroyed 12 quintals of sub-standard sweets in Kot Bhalwal area.
Under the directions of Commissioner Food Safety, Shakeel ur Rehman, the Food Safety teams raided several sweets shops, manufacturing units as well as establishments dealing with selling of milk and milk products viz. khoya, paneer etc in last one week so as to ensure availability of quality, hygienic and safe food and sweets to the consumers.
Acting on a tip off that sub-standard sweets are being manufactured and sold at an establishment in Kot Bhalwal area, a team of Food Safety led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madan Magotra and assisted by Assistant Commissioner Rural raided the place and seized about 12 quintals of sweets that were being manufactured under most unhygienic conditions. The team also lifted three samples of the sweets for quality analysis.
The owner of the manufacturing unit was imposed a fine Rs 2500 for running his unit under unhygienic conditions under Section 56 of FSSA. Later, the three samples of sweets were declared as substandard by Food Analyst Jammu and, accordingly, the Food Safety team under the supervision of DC Madan Magotra destroyed the entire stock of sweets seized by them.
Earlier, on Friday, 240 kg of suspicious khoya was seized by a Food Safety team from a vehicle in Bus Stand area which was later on destroyed as it was found to be sub-standard on quality analysis by the Food Analyst Jammu.
