12-yr-old successfully operated for rare tumour at GMC Anantnag

Srinagar, May 31: In a remarkable medical feat, the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag achieved a major milestone by successfully operating on a 12-year-old boy with an exceedingly rare vascular tumour deeply embedded in the nasal region, originating from the base of the skull.
The intricate surgery, which lasted approximately 5 hours, was conducted without any complications, marking a significant advancement for the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department at GMC Anantnag.
The tumour, scientifically known as Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA), posed a considerable challenge to the surgical team.
Led by Prof (Dr) Sajad Majid Qazi, the ENT Surgical team employed a combined approach involving endoscopy and lateral Rhinotomy to operate on this particular case.
The team, comprising Dr Salman Khursheed (Consultant), Dr Amir Yousuf (Associate Professor), and Dr Ehsan (Registrar), executed the procedure with utmost precision.
The Anaesthesia team, headed by Prof (Dr) Imtiyaz Naqash and consisting of Dr Zaffar Malik (Assistant Professor), Dr Omer (Registrar), and Dr Mehraj, ensured the patient’s comfort throughout the operation.
Post-surgery, the officials said, the patient is in a stable condition, recovering well under close medical observation. Dr Aubid Malik, the Medical Superintendent of AH-GMC Anantnag, extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for their exceptional performance.
Prof (Dr) Tariq Syed Qureshi, the Principal of GMC Anantnag, expressed appreciation for the team’s success, emphasizing the importance of such complex tertiary care procedures. He reiterated the necessity of transforming GMC Anantnag into one of the leading medical institutes in the region.
