SRINAGAR, July 23: In a startling revelation the Government today submitted before the court that 1368 posts of Medical Officers in Medical Department are vacant in Kashmir and Jammu divisions.
In Kashmir Division out of total 1999 posts of Medical Officers 498 are vacant and in Jammu Division 870 are vacant and information about Ladakh division has not been furnished by the Government to High Court.
The information about vacancy of MOs in Medical Department has been provided by Advocate General to the Division Bench of Chief Justice N P Vasantha Kumar and Justice Hasnain Masoodi in a suo moto cognizance taken by the court to a news item published in “EXCELSIOR” under the caption of ‘No MBBS doctor in 15 PHCs of District Udhampur’ and court sought remaining information about the strength of MOs in District Leh and Kargil.
Earlier court was given the information of MOs to the extent of District Udhampur only in which 36 post are filled out of total number of 112 and 76 are vacant and after that court sought complete information about sanctioned strength of Medical Officers for the entire State.
Taking serious note on the functioning of Health and Medical Education Department court had issued notice to CS, Commissioner Secretary to Health, Director Health Service and Chief Medical Officer Udhampur.
According to the news item carried in EXCELSIOR, bed ridden health care service in District Udhampur has virtually gone on life support system as not a single MBBS doctor is available in 15 PHCs which cover more than half area of the entire district and over 3 lakh souls are dependent on these PHCs.
Court directed the AG of the State to file the latest status report with regard to strength of MOs for District Leh and Kargil by or before July 30 and ordered listing of the case for further proceedings on the same day.
