4 deaths in Ladakh, 141 fresh COVID cases

Recoveries surge, active positive cases on decline in Jammu region

JAMMU, May 28: Fourteen women, a female Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Police, six kin of serving and retired security personnel and wife of a prominent Gurugram businessman were among 30 persons who died of COVID-19 in Jammu region today while 1009 tested positive.
A 59-year-old woman hailing from Gurugram in Haryana,who happened to be the wife of a prominent businessman, who had come to Katra in connection with business purposes, died of COVID-19 in the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu today.
A woman ASI of Ramban Police Haneefa Begum, who was posted at Gool Police Station, succumbed to the virus while being shifted from District Hospital Ramban to the GMC Jammu.
A 104-year-old woman from Channi Himmat, passed away due to virus and ailments in the Military Hospital Satwari.
Five other kin of serving and retired security personnel also died of Coronavirus at the Military Hospitals at Satwari, Akhnoor and Udhampur today.
A 25-year-old girl from Badoon and 35-year-old man from Kotedhara died in the GMC Rajouri today. Both were positive for the virus. A 36-year-old man from Nihalpur Simbal in RS Pura, 40-year-old from Pangari Sungal Akhnoor and 42-year-old female from Bandral Ramgarh also died of COVID-19.
A total 13 Corona casualties were today reported from Jammu district, eight Rajouri, two each Udhampur and Samba and one each from Kishtwar, Reasi, Doda, Kathua and Poonch districts.
Six COVID positive persons died at home and were later shifted to the hospitals by their family members.
This is for the first time that Rajouri district recorded eight COVID fatalities in a single day. Other deaths in Rajouri were reported from Dodasan Bala, Saaj, Kandi, Bhattian Darhal (two) and Nowshera besides Kotedhara and Badoon.
COVID fatalities in Jammu district occurred at Miran Sahib, Trikuta Nagar (two), Old Satwari Chatha, RS Pura, Chak Bhagwana Jourian, Gadigarh, Udheywala, Gandhi Nagar and Suchetgarh.
Thirty casualties today took Corona toll in Jammu region to 1838, the highest being 1026 in Jammu district followed by 177 Rajouri, 128 Kathua, 118 Udhampur, 107 Samba, 87 Doda, 78 Poonch, 49 Ramban, 36 Reasi and 32 in Kishtwar district.
Meanwhile, the J&K Government today confirmed six cases of Mucromycosis or black fungus in the UT so far.
Among 1009 COVID positive cases today, 320 were reported from Jammu district, 107 Rajouri, 92 Poonch, 82 Doda, 80 Reasi, 79 Kathua, 77 Ramban, 71 each Udhampur and Samba and 30 in Kishtwar district.
As against 1009 fresh cases, 1741 persons recovered from the virus, the maximum 667 being from Jammu district followed by 305 Rajouri, 192 Ramban, 182 Kathua, 161 Samba, 98 Udhampur, 57 Reasi, 42 Poonch and 37 in Doda district.
Jammu region now has 1,09,585 Corona cases. Among them, 16142 are active positives while 91605 have recovered from the virus and there have been 1838 casualties.
Meanwhile, four persons today died of COVID-19 in the Union Territory of Ladakh while 141 persons tested positive for the virus.
Three deaths were reported in Leh district and one in Kargil.
Out of 141 fresh positive cases, 111 were reported from Leh and 30 Kargil.
With new cases, Corona count in Ladakh has gone up to 18186 including 1656 active positives, 16345 recoveries and 185 deaths, 135 of them in Leh and 50 in Kargil.
The UT Administration of Ladakh today also declared Mucromycosis or black fungus as an epidemic. An order to this effect was issued by Dr Pawan Kotwal, Principal Secretary Health and Medical Education Department, Ladakh.
Govt may allow partial Unlock soon
The Jammu and Kashmir Government is mulling partial Unlock to begin with from next month as COVID casualties and cases have substantially gone down but will undertake the exercise in such a way that markets and public places are not crowded.
Reliable sources told the Excelsior that educational institutions will remain closed at least till summer vacations and their reopening in August will depend on the situation prevailing then. However, the Government could reopen the Universities with limited strength of students after vacations.
Reopening of shops other than those dealing with essential commodities is also under considerations and if the COVID cases maintain declining trend, standalone shops of all types might be allowed to open on alternate days to start with followed by five days except weekends.
Restaurants could be allowed to operate but for home delivery orders only, sources said but added that bars are likely to stay shut. However, the Government might allow reopening of liquor shops initially on alternate days followed by all days except weekends.
Barber shops and Salons/Beauty Parlors could also be allowed to resume their business on alternate days but Gyms, Clubs, parks etc are likely to remain closed.
The Government could also allow three-wheeler operators to start operations but could keep 50 percent ceiling on taxis, maxi-cabs, Cab aggregators and public transport.
