Srinagar, June 7: Government today said that it has issued gun licences to 14495 defence personnel and 183 civilians out of 14566 and 210 applications respectively that it received from 2010 to 2016.
In a written reply to a question of MLA Shah Mohammad Tantray in Lower House, the Minister Incharge Home said the gun license are issued to civilians / army/ security forces personnel for self protection in accordance with the provision of Arms Act/ Rules & Guidelines of Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs.
“The gun licenses in respect of army personnel are issued on the basis of recommendations from concerned commanding officers and in case of civilians after verifications from District Police,” the Minister stated.
In order to streamline the issuance/renewal/ extension of jurisdiction of gun licenses, the Home Department has issued circular instructions from time to time, to be observed by all the District Magistrates while issuing the gun license, the Minister stated.
The Minister stated that web based software has also been introduced to bring in more transparency. “All the District Magistrates have been instructed to switch over to web based system for issuance/ renewal/ extension/ of jurisdiction of the licenses,” he added.
