SAMBA, Mar 21: Martyr Rakesh Kumar’s 14th Martyrdom Day was observed in his native village Darui near here, on Monday. The program was organized by 6 JakLI of the Indian Army. The ceremony is observed every year in his native village Darui, where a statue of the martyr has been installed.
Martyr Rakesh Kumar was posted in 1 Para Unit of Army in Kupwara Sector. On March 21, 2009, on a specific information, he had surrounded four terrorists in Kupwara sector of Kashmir Valley, after which an encounter with them started. After killing two terrorists, Rakesh Kumar was seriously injured and later he attained martyrdom. He was awarded with the Shaurya Chakra (posthumously) for his supreme sacrifice.
District Development Council, Samba, president Keshav Dutt Sharma was present along with Deputy District Development Commissioner, Ravinder Kumar Anand, Martyr’s father Ratan Chand Sharma, brother Suresh Kumar, wife Rajni Devi, daughter Diksha Bharti, son Dishant Sharma, BJP vice president and former Minister, Surjit Singh Slathia, DySP Ajay Anand, local Sarpanch Vimala Devi, Sarpanch Sunil Choudhary, social worker Tony Sharma, students of Degree College Samba NCC were also present in large numbers, who paid homage to the martyr by garlanding his statue.
