Srinagar, July 21: Police have arrested around a dozen persons on charges of stone throwing and attacking Police Station Nowhatta during anti-Israel protests from parts of old city.
Last week, there were massive anti-Israeli protests in old city followed by stone-throwing on police and para-military Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Last week on Thursday evening the protesters attacked Nowhatta Police Station with stones. Police fired several ammunition rounds in air and teargas to disperse the youth.
Police had registered several cases under FIR number 68/ 2014 under Sections 147, 141, 149, 336, 427 RPC. Police said they had identified the youth who were leading attack.
Around one dozen youth were arrested in nocturnal raids from various parts of the Old City. Police have also detained two youth for torching scooter of a cop in old city. The cop who was in civvies was beaten up by mob and his scooter torched.
At least 15 persons including 3 police men were injured in clashes and protests that broke out in many parts of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district for the third consecutive day today against the killing of a youth in Khudwani area of Kulgam district on Saturday, while a shutdown was observed in parts of Kulgam district.
Clashes were reported from Rahdwan, Khadwani and Koimoh areas where the youth took to streets and pelted stones at the police and CRPF. Police fired tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Suhail Ahmad Lone, 15, son of Ghulam Qadir Lone of Havoora, Mishpora was killed while two others suffered injuries on Saturday when security forces opened fire upon a group of anti-Israeli protesters in Khudwani area of Kulgam district.
The killing set off violent protests prompting the officials to impose the restrictions in few volatile parts of the district. Despite strict security measures, clashes broke out between protesters and forces in few parts of the district.
Around 5 youth were injured when police also fired tear smoke shells to disperse the stone-throwing protesters..
Meanwhile, life returned to normal in Kulgam and Anantnag townships where a shutdown was observed yesterday against the teenager’s killing, reports said.
