155 cases resolved in Special Lok Adalats across J&K; Rs 4.33 cr settled

JAMMU, Oct 7: The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Legal Services Authority, under the leadership of Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh, organized a Special Lok Adalat focusing on amicable settlements of bank cases.
Justice Tashi Rabstan, Executive Chairman of J&K Legal Services Authority, and Justice Sindhu Sharma, Chairperson of the High Court Legal Services Committee, provided guidance for this initiative.
Across the UT of J&K, various courts held this Special Lok Adalat, taking up a total of 886 bank cases. Impressively, 155 of these cases were settled amicably, resulting in a settlement amount of Rs 4, 32, 26, 122.
Amit Kumar Gupta, Member Secretary of J&K Legal Services Authority, highlighted that this event marked the third Special Lok Adalat of the year. The next one is scheduled for November 18, 2023, with a focus on settling consumer cases pending in different consumer forums within the UT of J&K. He encouraged advocates and litigants to make the most of these Special Lok Adalats.
Gupta expressed gratitude towards the judicial officers, Secretaries of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), advocates, court staff, and Legal Services Institutions, as well as the litigants for their enthusiastic participation. He also acknowledged the role of Para Legal Volunteers and the media in spreading awareness about these initiatives.
In Srinagar, the DLSA, led by Jawad Ahmed, organized a Special Lok Adalat for bank cases and commercial disputes. Two benches were constituted, resulting in the settlement of 214 out of 348 cases, with a settlement amount of Rs. 10,41,57,54.
Similarly, in Bandipora, under the guidance of Principal District & Session Judge Amit Sharma, a Special Lok Adalat on bank cases was held. Two benches handled 28 cases, with 5 cases settled, awarding a total of Rs 25, 50, 000 to aggrieved parties.
In Anantnag, a Lok Adalat for bank cases, both pre and post-litigation, was supervised by the Principal District Judge. One bench took up 122 cases, settling 24 of them, with a total settlement amount of Rs 95, 33, 713, including a substantial amount in a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) case.
Furthermore, Shopian conducted a Lok Adalat for bank cases with one bench handling 44 cases. Ten cases were settled amicably, resulting in a settlement amount of Rs 14, 97, 000.
In Kathua, a Special Lok Adalat under the guidance of chairman, DLSA, Kathua, Ashok Kumar Shavan, covered various cases, including matrimonial, MACT, bank recovery, and criminal compoundable cases.
Seven benches were constituted, facilitating the settlement of 335 out of 459 cases, with a total settlement amount of Rs 97, 92, 244.
Notably, the Lok Adalat’s efforts even saved marriages in some matrimonial cases.
