JAMMU : The Jammu and Kashmir government today said that 160358 kanals of state land has been ‘illegally occupied’ and ‘encroached’ in different districts across Jammu region.
In a written reply to the question asked by the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party MLA Yash Pal Kundal, the government said, “160358 kanals of the state land is under occupation of various individuals.”
Mr Kundal has sought district-wise details on state land under illegal occupation of land mafia and other encroachers, besides area of land regularised under the Roshni Act.
Besides Jammu district, 177551 kanals of land is under illegal occupation in Doda, 104746 in Kathua, 75159 in Kishtwar, 129717 in Poonch, 396018 in Rajouri, 167521 in Ramban, 141524 in Reasi, 97133 in Samba and 152416 in Udhampur district.
Meanwhile in Srinagar district, 44294 kanals of land is ‘encroached’.
The government further said that 496 kanals of land in Srinagar and 44915 kanals in Jammu have been regularised under the Roshni Act.
Explaining the salient features of the ‘Roshni Scheme’, the government said according to the Jammu and Kashmir State Lands (Vesting of ownership to occupants) Act 2001, an occupant, who is in actual physical possession of the state land as on the date of commencement of the J&K State Lands Act, 2004 (Amendment), may apply for vesting of ownership subject to the conditions.
