JAMMU, July 5: 16th Martyr day of  Veer Udhayman Singh (sena medal) was observed at his native village Shama Chack, Jhiri, Jammu, today.
On the occasion, Col Naveen J Ponsonby ( CO 5 Garh RIF) was the chief guest who paid floral tributes to brave soldier, who scarified his life while defending Nation’s integrity during operation Vijay in Kargil sector on 5th July, 1999. Speaking on this occasion, Col Naveen said that Army has played an important role in fighting militancy and maintain peace in the State.
While addressing the gathering, Ashok Kumar Gupta, Sarpanch (Kalyanpur) remembered and recalled the childhood life of the Udhayman popularly known by his nick name (Shonu), who added was very outstanding boy in every field in his village and was participating in every routine activity of the village.
Balwan Singh, ex MLA, Col (retd) Banna Ram and Col J D S Kotwal, Director, Sainik Welfare Board, J&K were the guests of honour for this occasion, who shared their views.
The family members of Udhayman Singh also paid rich tributes to the son of soil.
At the end of the Shahadi Diwas function, school uniform, note books and pensils were distributed to the poor students of the locality.
On the occasion, cultural programme was presented by students of the school.
