JAMMU, Apr 5: Minister for Finance and Ladakh Affairs, Abdul Rahim Rather today informed the Lower House that 7395 transformers were damaged and replaced in Jammu province during 2012-13. However, 177 were yet to be replaced in various Divisions of the Power Development Department across the region.
Replying to the Calling Attention Notice of Congress MLA, G M Saroori, Mr Rather said, “wherever the Distribution Transformers (DTs) get damaged, the same are replaced at the earliest by the Power Development Department”, adding “in certain cases, where the Distribution Transformers are extensively damaged or when the distribution sub-station is located at a considerable distance from the road side or in case the road is blocked, more time is taken for replacement of damaged transformers”.
“The repair of distribution transformers is taken up in a Central Workshop established at Jammu. In addition, Divisional Transformer Repair workshops also cater to the requirements of repair transformers”, he further said, adding “even the repair of transformers is also out sourced to local transformer/ repairing SSI units”.
In Inderwal constituency, 151 transformers got damaged during last financial year out of which 129 transformers have been replaced. The rest are under process of replacement, the Minister said, adding Planning and Development Department has also authorized augmentation of Distribution Transformers from 25 KVA to 63 KVA under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana subject to the condition that agreement load has consumed 80% of the installed capacity of DT.
“Damage rate of DTs in J&K is highest in the country due to ruthless and unauthorized use of electric supply by consumer”, he added.
