JAMMU, Apr 5: Eighteen shanties of Rohingyas gutted in a major fire in Trikuta Nagar area of city outskirts on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
Though there is no official confirmation but according to the reports, the fire started from a heap of ‘Kabaar’ around 1 AM and quickly engulfed the shanties (jhuggis) of the surrounding Maratha Mohalla.

Three fire tenders immediately rushed to the spot but as the shanties were made up of wooden planks and plastic sheets, the fire spread fast and before the fire tenders reached there, all the shanties were gutted completely. However, the flames were controlled by 3:30 AM.
According to SSP Jammu, Chandan Kohli, the fire raged for more than two hours and when the flames were put out, it had destroyed all the shelters of the Rohingya. “No injury or loss of life has been reported in the fire,” he said, adding, cause of the fire is yet to be known.
Meanwhile, Tehsildar Bahu Dr Rohit Sharma along with other officers visited the spot and assessed the loss. Dr Sharma told Excelsior that the administration is providing all help to the affected Rohingya families.
