1st Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgery conducted in Kargil

KARGIL, Sept 7: The first ever Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgery was conducted today in Kargil at District Hospital during a mega multi-speciality health camp.
The 5-day health camp was inaugurated by Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan and organized by Al Reza Health Care and Research Foundation (AHC&RF) and District Hospital Kargil at Inqilab Complex.
On the 1st day of the camp, Dr Usha Kiran, who is a UK trained Consultant with more than 25 years of experience and is currently working at Prime Hospital Dubai, performed 6 Gynaecological surgeries which included 3 Abdominal Hysterectomies, 1 Vaginal Hysterectomy, 1 Laparoscopic Oophorectomy for Ovarian mass and 1 Laparoscopic Right Ovarian Cystectomy.
One of the hysterectomies had a fibroid tumour weighing 1.75 kg which was removed. This is the first time in the history of Kargil that Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgery was performed.
Dr Usha Kiran, while talking to media said, “It is a humbling experience to use my well honed skills from the UK to help the needy patients in this far-flung remote part of India. It is my way of giving back to the people of my country”. She further added that there is need for improvement in the infrastructure at the District Hospital Kargil, particularly in the Operation Theatre with regard to amenities and instruments required for complex open and laparoscopic surgeries.
She assured to visit Kargil in future also so that such specialized care can be brought to the doorstep of these needy and poor people who cannot afford it otherwise.
During the camp, 280 patients were examined in Ophthalmology OPD, 270 patients examined in Chest OPD, 153 patients examined in Psychiatric OPD and 110 patients including 11 cases of total knee replacement were examined in Orthopedics OPD.
