JAMMU, Sept 14: Principal Sessions Judge Jammu, Kartar Singh today acquitted Bawa Ditta and Neelam Kumari, husband and sister-in-law of a woman in abetment to suicide case after 14 years long trial and investigation.
According to the police case, on November 5, 1999, one Santosh Kumari alias Pinki set herself ablaze in order to get rid of mental and physical torture at the hands of her husband and sister-in-law, who were demanding more dowry. Later, she died in the hospital and after completion of investigation police presented challan in the court of law.
After hearing both the sides, Principal Sessions Judge Jammu, Kartar Singh observed, “the evidence produced by the prosecution must be fair so as to exclude with certainty every reasonable doubt of the guilt of the accused. There is not even a single witness to the alleged occurrence nor any other witness to prove that the relations between the accused and the deceased were strained”.
“The prosecution witnesses have only created suspicion in their statements regarding the commission of the offence”, the court said, adding “prosecution has miserably failed to prove its case against the accused”. Accordingly, the accused were acquitted of the charges leveled against them.
