Srinagar, Sept 7: Police in a series of actions in Kulgam and Bandipora arrested 2 extortionists involved in extorting money from gullible people. Extorted cash and a knife were also recovered from their possession.
In Kulgam, Police received a written complaint from one Shabir Ahmad Bhat resident of Bachroo stating that a person namely Mohammad Iqbal Bhat resident of Bachroo extorted money from him in the name of the Police department.
“The accused person threatened him that Police will arrest him as he was earlier involved in drug peddling and demanded Rs 50,000 from him to avoid arrest. The complainant paid him Rs 20,000 in advance as he was frightened that he may be arrested by Police for the unknown crime,” police said.
Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 205/2021 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Kulgam and started an investigation into the matter.
A special investigating team led by SHO PS Kulgam under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Kulgam Shri Ghulam Muhamad Bhat-JKPS swung into action and arrested the accused & also recovered the extorted money from his possession. During questioning, the accused confessed to his involvement in the pre-planned crime. Further investigation of the case is in progress.
In Bandipora, Police received information that some miscreants impersonating terrorists were extorting money from people during evening hours in different areas of Bandipora town. Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of law was registered at PS Bandipora and investigation was initiated.
“During the investigation, officers taking assistance of modern techniques and human leads were able to zero in on one suspect namely Aejaz Ahmad Sheikh resident of Bandipora. Subsequently, he was arrested and during questioning, he confessed his involvement in the commission of the crime,” police said.
On his disclosure, police said, a weapon of offence (knife) used in the commission of the crime was also recovered. Further investigation into the matter is in progress.
