2 held in cement scam, 350 bags seized

JAMMU, July 23: Police today arrested a cement dealer and a truck driver along with 350 bags of spurious cement filled in branded Ambuja bags at Jewel Chowk. The cement was being sent to Vinod Cement Store, Mendhar.
Police said the cement depot owner, Raman Kumar son of Ajay Kumar R/o Anuradhapuram, Upper Barnai used to bring local made cement from Punjab and mix it in Ambuja bags at his depot at Jakh.
He had also been taking Ambuja cement from Punjab on cheaper rates and selling it here on higher rates evading duty.
Police said 350 bags of spurious cement packed in Ambuja bags were seized from truck No. 1109 JK02T at Jewel Chowk by Nowabad police station teams headed by SHO Jai Pal Sharma during a naka laid at the spot.
Police arrested truck driver Altaf Hussain son of Nazir Hussain R/o Madantpur, Rajouri from the spot and later raided the cement depot at Jakh. The depot owner was also arrested.
Police said the spurious cement had been dispatched to Vinod Cement Store, Mendhar, whose owner, Vinod Kumar was also absconding.
Police said empty and filled bags of Ambuja, in which the depot owner had filled local made cement, have also been seized.
A case has been registered at Nowabad police station against the accused for further investigations. Police said efforts were on to ascertain the dealers, who were purchasing spurious cement from Raman Kumar.
