SRINAGAR : Two militants, reportedly belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were killed in a fierce encounter in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, where firing has stopped but the operation was on.
Official sources said that the Army and Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint operation at village Hanjan in Pulwama following a tip-off about the presence of three militants in the area.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village late last night, militants opened fire with automatic weapons.
More reinforcement was rushed to the area and cordon around the area was further tightened to foil any militant attempt to escape, they said, adding that the operation was stopped due to darkness.
However, intermittent firing from a particular house continued, sources said, adding that with the first light, security forces launched an offensive, which ensued a fierce gunbattle.
One militant was killed in the initial assault while second was also shot dead.
The house from where the militants were firing was also blasted, sources said, adding that the bodies of two militants, reportedly belonging to JeM were recovered. Firing has stopped, they said. Security forces have launched a search in the debris of the house damaged in the encounter, they added.
