Srinagar, July 17: In a yet another tragic incident, two minor boys today died after slipping into canal Dadi here in Khiram Sirhama area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Locals said that both the boys were seen playing near the canal when all of a sudden one among them slipped into the canal. Another boy, in a bid to save the one who slipped into the canal, jumped into water. However, both the boys failed to manage to get out of the canal and subsequently drowned.
Soon after the incident, a police party also rushed to the spot who with the help of the locals managed to get both the boys out of the canal and were rushed to the nearby PHC Khiram.

Both the boys were declared as brought dead by the doctors at the Health Centre. The 12 year old boys have been identified as Abrar of Galan area of the district and Waseem of Achadar.
It is pertinent to mention here that there have been a couple of such incidents earlier also in Kashmir districts in which few boys while taking a bath amid scorching heat drowned in the rivers. On July 13, 2 minor boys drowned in two separate incidents of drowning
in Srinagar’s Dal lake and a stream in North Kashmir district of Kupwara.
Meanwhile, after the incident in Anantnag, the authorities in the district imposed a blanket ban on swimming or bathing in the water bodies in the districts with immediate effect.
An order in this regard was issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) asking the Executive Magistrates and police officials to ensure that the ban is implemented.
“In view of the threat to human life due to drowning incidents while bathing/swimming in Rivers//Streams/ Nallah; and as a precautionary measure, a blanket ban is hereby imposed on swimming/bathing in river Jhelum, its tributaries, nallahs, streams and other water bodies within Anantang district forthwith. The Tehsildars (Executive Magistrates), Police Officers (SHOs) & Engineers of Jal Shakti Department shall keep strict vigil in their respective areas of jurisdiction to ensure implementation of the order in letter and spirit,” the order read.
