* `Involvement of cops’ under investigation

RAJOURI, Apr 8: Two persons have been arrested by police for the theft of seized articles including four kilograms of heroin and fake currency from the high-security `Malkhana’ the in District Court complex in Rajouri town.
The theft inside the ‘Malkhana’ of the court complex had taken place on the intervening night of April 3 and 4, prompting the authorities to suspend five police personnel including an officer (ASI).
Senior Superintendent of Police Rajouri, Amritpal Singh while addressing a press conference today identified the accused persons as Mohd Showket, son of Mir Mohd, resident of Khari Karmara in Poonch and Mohd Taj, son of Mohd Aslam, resident of Hayatpur in Manjakote tehsil in Rajouri district.
The stolen property including four packets of heroin worth crores of rupees in the international market, fake currency notes with a face value of Rs one lakh and a mobile phone were recovered from Showket, the SSP said.
After registering a case FIR No. 143/2023 u/S 457/380 IPC at Rajouri Police Station, special teams were constituted who analysed CCTV footage at various locations and questioned suspected persons, leading to the arrest of the two main accused, the SSP added.
He said both the accused confessed their involvement in the crime and stolen items have also been recovered. The SSP said the involvement of the duo in other cases of theft is being looked into.
When asked about the possible involvement of a few policeman under suspension, the SSP said the investigation was still in progress. He said the five policemen including an ASI were suspended for their negligence in the duty and due to which the theft case occurred. He disclosed that accused Mohd Showkat used to come to Rajouri court to appear in different cases and at that time he made the plan.
The SSP was accompanied by ASP Rajouri, Vivek Shekhar, DySP Propkar Singh and some other officers.
