2 sisters, mother die of mysterious food poisoning

UDHAMPUR, Aug 5: Mystery shrouded the death of two minor girls and their mother within 48 hours after they developed symptoms of severe food poisoning, here in remote village Resan, around 40 kms from Ramnagar tehsil.

One of the girls died at Ramnagar hospital during treatment on Saturday and the other collapsed meanwhile at home while mother of the duo breathed her last at Government Medical College Hospital Jammu, this morning.
The shocking incident has taken place close on the heels of a similar episode at village Satyalta in Ghordi where two children died and more than 90 persons fell ill, some of them seriously, due to food poisoning in a marriage function on August 1.
However, Police said that there was no connection between the occurrences of these similar incidents of apparent food poisoning that led to deaths.
The deceased of Resan village were identified as Poli Devi (30), wife of Yashpal Singh and their daughters; 13- year old Annu Devi and 9-year old Sapna Devi.
According to Yashpal, his daughter Annu Devi fell ill on August 3 showing symptoms of severe vomiting and Diarrhea after which she was taken to the Ramnagar Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile he received a phone call from home that the other girl Sapna Devi had also developed similar symptoms of severe Diarrhea and vomiting. After a few hours, both the girls collapsed; Annu Devi at Ramnagar Hospital and Sapna Devi at home.
On returning home, mother of the two girls also fell ill on August 4 morning. Suffering from vomiting and Diarrhea, she was also rushed to the Sub District Hospital Ramnagar where doctors referred her to District Hospital Udhampur and then further to GMC Hospital Jammu in view of her serious condition. During treatment, she collapsed at GMC Hospital Jammu this morning.
Besides the deceased girls, Yashpal Singh has two more children; a 4- year old girl and 18- month old boy, who were reported to be fine.
The mysterious deaths have shocked the entire area as cause of apparent food poisoning could not be ascertained.
According to SHO Ramnagar, Inspector Sureshwar Dev Singh, Police have taken cognizance of the matter and initiated inquest proceedings in the case. Postmortem of the deceased woman was got conducted at GMC Hospital Jammu and exact cause of death would be ascertained after the report is received, he added.
