NEW DELHI: Four persons, including two Uzbek women, have been arrested for smuggling gold worth Rs 73 lakh at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here in separate incidents.
In first case, two Afghan nationals were intercepted by the customs officials after their arrival here from Dubai yesterday.
“On detailed examination five cut pieces gold bars weighing 1.4 kgs having market value of Rs 44.55 lakh were recovered from them, which was concealed by affixing with double-side adhesive tape beneath the frame of baggage trolley on both sides of front wheel,” Deputy Commissioner of customs at the IGIA, Karan Thapar, said today.
In another case, two women were intercepted after their arrival from Almaty, Uzbekistan on Friday. “On detailed examination of their baggages and personal search, nine pieces of gold discs and gold bars total weighing 916 gms having market value of Rs 28.36 lakh was recovered from them, which was found concealed in the private parts by them,” a press release issued by the customs said.
The gold weighing about 2.4 kgs, having market value of Rs 73 lakh, was seized in both the cases. The accused– including two Afghan and two Uzbek nationals–have been arrested, it said. (AGENCIES)
