JAMMU, Mar 17: In a tragic mishap, two young doctors from Jammu drowned in a nullah while having a leisure trip on Sunday at Tikri near Udhampur, this afternoon.
Identity of the deceased was established as Dr Nitin Gupta, son of Dr O P Gupta of Mohalla Kaleeth in Jammu and Dr Vikrant Sharma, son of Subash Chander of Karan Nagar Jammu.
Nitin was working as Registrar in Government Indira Gandhi Dental College, Jammu while Dr Vikrant was working at Vivekananda Hospital Ambphalla, informed Additional SP Udhampur Benam Tosh who personally supervised the operation for fishing out bodies of the deceased from nullah.
The incident took place when both the deceased along with their two other friends, identified as Dr Sumit Sabharwal and Amit Chib, son of Harbans Lal of Ploura were tracking the area for excursion.
After taking meal at Manthal, they stopped at Tikri and went near a nullah for leisure and capturing some photographs. During this, Nitin slipped into the nullah while Vikrant jumped into the deep water for saving his friend. Sensing trouble, both Sumit and Amit raised alarm for help but all in vein.
On getting information, Police and army reached the spot and started rescue operation with the help of divers. Even as the body of Nitin Gupta was fished out after some time, it took around five hours to recover the body of Vikrant Sharma.
Later, both bodies were taken to hospital and then handed over to the family members after completion of legal formalities.
