200 timber sleepers seized, 2 arrested

RAJOURI, Aug 19: The police seized 200 timber sleepers from Thannamandi area and arrested an ex-serviceman and his son today.
Giving details a senior police official said that acting on a specific information a police party led by SHO ( DySP Prob) Mehraj-ud-Din, under the supervision of SDPO Thannamandi Surjit Bhagat organised a raid and recovered 200 sleepers of Deodar and Kail from the house of  Ex-serviceman Barkat Hussain at village Pangai on Shahdara-Thannamandi road. The timber had been dumped in a large room. It was being sold clandestinely by the party.
The police seized the entire timber and arrested Barkat Hussain and his son Mohd Rafqat. They have been placed under sustained interrogation. Majority of the timber is of Kail species. The police said that majority of the timber has come from Deara Ki Gali and Bafliaz area. The police also registered a case FIR 119/2014 against the accused persons.
Replying to a question, the senior official said that without the connivance of Forest field staff including Guards and Foresters, such huge felling or pilferage of timber is not possible. They said the police may place some Forest officials under sustained questioning in this concern. The police has already placed both father and son under questioning and some clues have been established. The police is also trying to find out to whom they have already sold the timber sleepers by felling trees from nearby Forest illegally.
