KATRA, Nov 26: Doctors at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, successfully operated and saved a 21-year-old patient from permanent facial deformity. The patient was suffering from a rare case of craniofacial syndrome called Parry Romberg’s Syndrome.
Hailing from the rural area of Reasi district, the patient had arrived the hospital with a complaint of progressive shrinkage of left side of her face. As she was suffering from the condition for the past two years there was severe facial deformity. The patient was examined and diagnosed with Parry Romberg’s Syndrome, a rare degenerative condition with female predilection seen in 1:70000 of the population. It is characterised by a slow progressive deterioration of the skin and soft tissues. If detected on time it is a curable condition.
Speaking about the case, Dr Arjun Malhotra, Consultant Cranio-Maxillofacial, Facial Reconstructive and Oral Cancer Surgeon, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, said, “When the patient visited the hospital, we immediately conducted both clinical and radiological evaluation that revealed the rare condition that the patient was going through. It is an autosomal dominant disorder which can lead to neurological and severe facial disorders if not treated on time”.
He said women, especially young female are more susceptible to the syndrome, in which the left side of the face is mostly affected. In this case, he said, they performed a unilateral facial augmentation using PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) biocompatible implants. Dr Malhotra said that the patient was discharged from the hospital within two days of the surgery and is doing well.
By successfully treating the rare condition the team at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital has once again proved their expertise in not only treating critical cases but even rare diseases.
