MENDHAR, May 31: At least 23 Water Supply Schemes (WSS) are lying almost defunct in Mendhar Sub Division of district Poonch.
Official sources said that majority of these schemes were launched about five to six years back and the work was subsequently started on them. At several places water tanks were also constructed during the process and digging of wells at the water sources was also set in motion.
While at many places the water sources turned dry while other places work was abandoned due to non-availability of funds. At some places the sanctioned funds were released and got exhausted but the work could not be completed. Even at some places, the water pipes were also laid but the same were dug out and stolen with the passage of time.
Assistant Executive Engineer, Mendhar Israr Ahmed Khan when contacted said that work on these WSS was started about six years ago but these nearly 23 schemes are still incomplete. He said if the adequate funds are provided these schemes could be completed. He admitted that at some places even the PHE pipes were laid but the same were stolen by some unknown people. The pump rooms were also raised at some places but the machinery was yet to be installed there. The matter has already been taken up with the higher authorities, he said.
