24 dead in Gujarat road mishap

AHMEDABAD, June 14:
Twenty-four people, including eleven children, were today killed while 15 others injured when their truck overturned on the Sanand-Viramgam Highway in the district.
The mishap took place in early morning hours near Charodi village when the vehicle laden with salt skidded off the road which was slippery due to overnight rains, police said.
Most of the victims were labourers travelling on the truck, they said, adding six out of the 15 injured persons were admitted to V S Hospital in the city and others at Sanand hospital.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced an immediate assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the kith and kin of the 24 dead passengers and an aid of Rs 75,000 each to 15 people injured in the accident, official sources said.
The deceased were tribals hailing from Jhabua.
Chouhan has also deputed ministers, Kailash Vijaywargia and Ranjana Singh Baghel, to visit the mishap site and help the family of the victims.
He also spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over the phone and urged him to provide required assistance to the mishap victims. (PTI)
