Kabul, Oct 13: A total of 25 Afghan inmates imprisoned in Iraq have been set free and returned to their homeland, Afghanistan’s Ministry for Refugees and Repatriation said on Saturday.
According to the ministry’s statement, the detainees were imprisoned in Iraq for not having legal documents for six months. After being released, they returned to Afghanistan via Iran through the Nimroz border.
At least 15 Afghan detainees were released from Pakistan’s jails and returned to Afghanistan last week. Currently, 8,000-9,000 Afghan citizens are imprisoned in jails abroad.
Most of them are held in Iran and Pakistan, data from the country’s prison administration showed in September.
