Doha, Feb 17: Doha will host the second international meeting on Afghanistan under UN auspices from February 17-18.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will preside over the two-day session together with regional organisations’ special envoys on Afghanistan.
The event will focus on coordinating the world community’s efforts to stabilise the situation in Afghanistan, the supply of humanitarian aid to the Afghan people, and the discussion of the international approach to the country’s ruling Taliban movement (under UN sanctions for terrorism).
It is currently unknown whether the Taliban itself will be present at the meeting, as the movement is seeking to be received as Afghanistan’s legitimate and recognised government and not as a blacklisted group.
The first Doha meeting took place in May 2023 in the absence of Taliban representatives. (UNI)
