3 drug peddlers held with 49 kgs of poppy straw

SRINAGAR, July 5: The police today arrested three drug peddlers in South Kashmir’s Kulgam and Shopian districts and recovered 49 kilograms of poppy straw from their possession.
A police party from PP Mirbazar, at a checkpoint established at Laram Ganjipora, intercepted a truck bearing Registration Number PB04N-9566, driven by Socha Singh, son of Joginder Singh, a resident of Hair Gurdaspora, Punjab.
During the search, the police recovered 20 kilograms of poppy straw from possession of the driver who has been arrested, and the vehicle used in the commission of the crime has also been seized.
Similarly, a police party from PS Manzgam, at a checkpoint established at Avil, arrested a drug peddler identified as Bashir Ahmad Ganie, son of Abdul Karim Ganie, a resident of Avil.
“During the search, 11 kilograms of poppy straw was recovered from his possession. He has been shifted to the police station, where he remains in custody,” the police said.
In Shopian, following specific information regarding the presence of contraband in the house of Ramiz Ahmad Dar, son of Late Gh Nabi Dar, a resident of Doompora Keegam, a police party from PP Keegam, along with the concerned executive magistrate, raided the said house.
“During the search, 18 kilograms of poppy straw was recovered from the said house. The accused has been arrested and shifted to the police station, where he remains in custody.”
Accordingly, cases under relevant sections of the law have been registered in the respective police stations, and investigations have been initiated.
