3 LeT militants killed in Sopore

SRINAGAR, Aug 5: Three militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter with security forces in Sopore area of Baramulla district today.
And  in Srinagar two motorcycle borne militants  attacked the night area domination party of CRPF and police near Nowgam Bypass Chowk. A wireless operator of 29 battalion of CRPF received a bullet injury in his thigh. The area being crowded and due to heavy traffic movement cops fired in air to avoid civilian casualty and militants fled from the spot after the incident. Searches have been launched in the area.
Police said that acting on a specific information about the presence of militants in Jamia Mohalla in Amargarh locality of Sopore, police’s special operation group along with Army’s  52 Rashtriya Rifles and 92, 177, 179  Battalions of CRPF cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

The militants hiding in the area opened fire on the joint search party, triggering an encounter. During encounter, three militants of LeT were eliminated.
Three AK 74 rifles and magazines were recovered from the encounter site.
The slain militants have been identified as Javed Ahmed Dar of Khanpora Baramulla, Abid Hamid Mir of Hajin Bandipora and Danish Manzoor of Sopore Town. The killing of three militants triggered protests in Bandipora and Baramulla districts.
Soon after the encounter, authorities snapped internet services in entire North Kashmir and mobile phone networks except BSNL. The authorities also clamped restrictions in Old Town area of Baramulla district. Soon after the bodies of the militants reached their areas, there were protests.
At least three persons were injured when security forces opened fire on protesters at Sadarkoot Bala in Bandipora district who were protesting against the militant killings. The injured have been identified as Hilal Ahmed Wani, Latief Ahmed Khan and Suhail Ahmed Bhat from Sadarkoot Bala. All the injured persons are stated to be stable in hospital.
Clashes erupted at Islamia College in Srinagar’s Hawal area after students claimed that one of the slain militants’ killed in Sopore was their colleague. Police and security forces arrested three Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in South Kashmir district of Shopian today.
Acting on a tip off, a joint naka of police and 62 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was established near Nagbal in Zainapora area of Shopian. Three OGWs of LeT – Showkat Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Kabir Mir resident of
Chitragam, Waseem Ahmad Sofi son of Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi resident of Chitragam Kalan and Junaid Ali Bhat son of Ali Mohammad Bhat resident of Sugoo Hindhama – were apprehended and three hand grenades were recovered from their possession.
Police said that during questioning, the OGWs admitted that they were working at behest of LeT operative Wasim Shah and were tasked to lob grenades on police establishments, cause death and injuries to police
personnel and snatch weapons in Shopian. The OGWs had also carried out observation of some police guards for militant attacks. Police has registered a case in this regard and are investigating the case.
