3 militants killed after exchange of fire with army in Egypt

CAIRO :  Three militants were killed after they tried to attack three army checkpoints in restive North Sinai, an army spokesperson has said.
“The militants, who were using mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, were killed during an exchange of fire with the army,” Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said yesterday.
The incident took place days after the bloody attack that claimed the lives of at least 32 soldiers and injured dozens others in Al-Arish city of North Sinai last Thursday.
Egypt’s Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since the January 2011 revolution that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak.
The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013.
Over 500 security personnel have been reported killed since then.
The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip. (AGENCIES)
