GUWAHATI, Sept 19:
Expressing concern over increasing deaths of rhinos, BJP national president Rajnath Singh today said the Centre must intervene to stop rampant rhino poaching in Assam.
Mr Singh taking on the state government said it had failed to check the rising incidents of poaching and the Centre must intervene immediately at Kaziranga National Park, the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
So far, poachers have killed over 30 rhinos in the state this year, mostly in Kaziranga.
Mr Singh talking to reporters here said Assam is known worldwide for its tea and the one-horned rhinos.
“Rhinos are being poached in Kaziranga. The state government is acting as a mute spectator,” he added.
He demanded that the state government must investigate who are involved in these poaching rackets, punish them and ensure that no one dares to indulge in poaching in the future through stringent laws and enforcement.
“If the state government does not act, the Centre must intervene immediately,” the BJP national chief added.
Rhinos are hunted for its horn, which is believed to posses mythical healing and medicinal powers, though scientific studies have proven otherwise.(UNI)
