JAMMU, June 23: A mysterious fire broke out at Jammu Railway Station this evening, engulfing at least 35 shanties in its path.
The blaze, initially reported around 6:50 PM, originated from a scrapyard that later spread to several nearby wooden shanties located at East Colony of the Jammu Railway Station.
“The fire possibly erupted in a scrapyard and later spread to other areas, causing explosion in two LPG cylinders. Two children who were trapped amidst the flames were successfully rescued by the emergency responders,” said a police officer.
He said with the help of 4-5 fire tenders pressed into service, the fire was almost contained by 9:30 PM without any casualty or grievous injuries to any individual as the area had been evacuated well in time.
According to the police officer, the fire razed 30-35 hutments to ashes.
“However, the exact losses in the devastating fire could be assessed by tomorrow morning only,” he said.
Meanwhile, police have initiated inquest proceedings to ascertain the cause of the fire.
