360 kanals of Waqf land in Poonch under Army’s possession: Govt

Srinagar, Aug 25: The Government today said that more than 360 kanals of Waqf land of commercial value is under the Army’s possession in the border district of Poonch out of which the Army is paying rent for only 21 kanals.
In a written reply to the question of MLC Shehnaz Ganei, Minister for Haj and Auqaf Peerzada Mohammad Syed informed the Legislative Council that 360 kanals and 10 marlas of Waqaf land is under the possession of Army out of which rent is being paid for only 21 kanals.
Syed said the matter of rent payment and rent against the balance land has been “taken up with the Army.”
The rate of rent for Banjar Qadim is Rs 895 per kanal and Rs 16286 per kanal in urban areas, he said, adding, “The matter has been taken up with the Central Government and the cases are under process.”
He said the total Waqaf land in district Poonch is 6225 Kanals and 11 marlas, out of which 401 and 17 marlas are illegally occupied in four tehsils of the district.
“401 kanals and 17 marlas are under the illegal occupation out of the total Waqf land,” he said.
Haveli has a total waqf land measuring 3161 kanals, Mandi 154 kanals 18 marlas, Surankote 852 kanals 16 marlas and Mendhar has highest Waqf land of 2056 kanals and 17 marlas.
Most of the waqf land which has been illegally occupied is in Haveli with 384 kanals and 17 marlas, he said.
