JAMMU, Oct 2: The third and last unit of Phase-II of Baglihar hydroelectric project at Chanderkot in Ramban district is likely to be ready for power generation by the end of this month as the turbine has been put under wet commissioning in initial phase of testing by the State Power Development Corporation (SPDC).
Besides, the civil work on first of its kind Power Management and Technical Institute in the State is also on war footing for inauguration of the same by Prime Minister Dr Narendra Modi, who has been formally invited by the State Government for the purpose.
With the commissioning of Baglihar –II, the energy-deficient State will be generating additional 450 MW power while opening of Power Management and Training Institute is all set to overcome to crisis of acute shortage of skilled manpower for the upcoming hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly on river Chenab, official sources informed the Excelsior.
While two turbines of  Baglihar–II, with capacity of 150 MW each, have  completed the trial run for generating power, the third turbine of equal capacity has been put on wet commissioning, which will be followed by 72-hour continuous run for testing of various parameters for commissioning by the end of  this month, sources explained.
“We have successfully commissioned turbine IV and V (I and II of Phase-II) with power generation capacity of 150 MW each while all machines of the VI turbine (III in Phase-II) have been put for wet commissioning for the last one week and we are hopeful about completion of this testing in next two to three weeks,” said Abdul Wahid, Chief engineer (Civil), Baglihar Hydroelectric Project.
If put together, all three units of the 450-MW project (Phase-II) would generate 1,302 million units of electricity, which would great help the State to cover the energy deficit of J&K, which has been spending thousands of crores of rupees every year for purchasing power to meet the requirement.
Nearly 40 per cent of the total power generation of Baglihar II would go to the State Power Development Department to meet its energy requirements, while the remaining 60 per cent would be sent outside to generate revenue to clear loans taken to raise the project.
Till date, the State owned power projects generate about 761-MW electricity. The commissioning of Phase-II of JKPDC owned Baglihar project would increase J&K’s generation capacity to over 1211-MW.
Besides formal commissioning of three units of Baglihar Phase II, a first of its kind Late Bhagat Amar Nath Power Management and Training Institute for the project workers is also likely to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister during his proposed visit to the State.
The in-house training institute, exclusively for the power projects in J&K, is being set up at around two kms ahead of the Baglihar Power Project site. On the instruction of Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, civil work on the training institute is going on war footing besides re-adjusting some old structures of Baglihar Project workshop, sources informed
The training institute for the technical traits, particularly for the hydroelectric projects,   would greatly help the State to overcome the crisis of skilled manpower for its upcoming projects like Rattle and Pakal Dul, which are in pipeline, sources added.
