JAMMU, Apr 6: Four Congress MLAs led by MLA Bandipora, Usman Majid today staged a walkout in protest against the denial of permission to them to participate in the debate initiated in the Assembly today on damages caused in the State due to recent rains and landslides.
As Vikar Rasool of Congress was speaking on the issue in the House, Usman Majid asked the Speaker that he also be given the time to take part in the debate because rains and landslides have caused heavy damage in his Constituency too.
But Speaker Kavinder Gupta asked the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh to make a statement while Usman Majid and other Congress legislators were pressing that they too be given time to take part in the debate so that they can raise the issue of their areas also.
After Speaker turned down their request, Usman Majid and his Party colleague Ghulam Nabi Bhat stood up from their seats and came to front row in protest. They marched towards the Well of the House but were not allowed by the watch and ward staff to move ahead of reporters chairs.
Later, they were joined by two other party colleagues including MLA Gulabgarh, Mumtaz Khan and MLA Shangus, Gulzar Ahmed Wani and they protested near reporters’ desk.
The protesting MLAs who were beating the desks continued their heated arguments for some time for not allowing them to take part in the debate. They were repeatedly heard saying that their constituencies have also suffered an extensive damage during floods.
However, the Speaker still did not allow them to speak and the four MLAs staged a walkout.
