SRINAGAR, Mar 4: Protests erupted on Srinagar-Leh highway in Ganderbal district today after the death of a woman who, according to reports, was ”forced” to consume poison by her in-laws.
Reports said clashes erupted soon in which four policemen including a senior official were injured.
Police said the deceased, Neelofar Bano wife of Shabir Ahmad Wani of Preng in Kangan and mother of two, breathed her last at SKIMS after she allegedly consumed poison today.
As the news of her death spread in Garage, Ganderbal, where the deceased woman’s parents live, scores of people blocked Srinagar-Leh highway and demanded that a case of murder be registered against the husband of the deceased.
The protestors also demanded that the dead body of the woman be handed over to her parents.
Four policemen including a station house officer were injured when protestors resorted to stone pelting at the forces when they tried to break the blockade of protestors on the highway.
Reports said that despite assurances by police, the protestors did not end their protest as a result of which scores of vehicles got stranded on the road.
Police then used teargas shells and cane-charged the protestors to break the blockade and the protestors in turn resorted to stone-pelting.
