Srinagar, Dec 17: Army and police this evening trapped a group of 3-4 militants in North Kashmir’s Kupwara forests after a brief gun battle.
Sources said that Army’s 47 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police this evening trapped a group of 3-4 militants in Kandi Gujjarpati forests of Kupwara this evening.
Reports said that Army and police launched an operation in Gujjarpati forests after they got a tip off about presence of a group of  militants in the forest area.
The militants present in the area opened fire on the troops leading to a fierce gun battle which lasted for about 15 minutes. More troops were rushed to the area and cordoned in the forest area which has been tightened to prevent militants from fleeing.
Sources said that the operation will be resumed in the morning at first light.
Earlier in the day, militants hurled a grenade a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker in the old city damaging several vehicles.
Militants hurled a hand grenade towards a CRPF bunker at Seki Dafar in the downtown around 1130 hours. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside causing damage to several vehicles.
A police official said that militants hurled a grenade on CRPF bunker of 161 battalion at Seki Dafar Chowk. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded meters away from the para-military bunker. “In the incident four private vehicles suffered damage”, the official said.
Police and CRPF cordoned off the area and launched a hunt to nab the militants.
In the meantime, CRPF vacated a 25 year-old bunker from Kawdara area of Srinagar city today.
The residents appreciated Government’s move to remove the bunker from the area.
