4 withdraw, 37 in fray for MLC poll

JAMMU, Nov 19: Four candidates today withdrew their nomination papers from the election for four seats of Legislative Council from Panchayat quota in Jammu division leaving 37 candidates in fray for both divisions of Jammu and Kashmir. No nominations were withdrawn in Kashmir division.
Of 37 contestants in fray now, 21 were race for two seats of Jammu division and 16 would vie for an equal number of seats in Kashmir division.
A total of 44 candidates had filed nomination papers for four seats of MLCs-two each from Jammu and Kashmir divisions till November 16, the last date for filing of nomination papers. While 28 nominations had been filed in Jammu division, 16 were filed in Kashmir division.
On the day of scrutiny i.e. November 17, nomination papers of three candidates were rejected in Jammu division bringing down total number of candidates to 41 and Jammu division’s contestants to 25.
With today’s withdrawal of four candidates, 37 contestants were now left in frat including 21 in Jammu and 16 in Kashmir.
Four candidates, who withdrew their papers in Jammu division, were Ved Prakash Gupta (Ved Mahajan of PDP), who opted out from J-I constituency as he had filed papers for both Jammu-1 and Jammu-2 seats, Prabhakar Singh, a covering candidate of PDP, Rajinder Kumar Sharma and Fazal Hussain, both Independents.
Congress leader and former Deputy Chairman, Legislative Council, Arvinder Singh Micky told a press conference today that Independent candidate, Rajinder Kumar Sharma had withdrawn from the contest in favour of Congress candidate Sham Lal Bhagat from Jammu.
