PANAJI: Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar has said that the Centre would allow the States to decide on the detention policy in schools after giving fair chance to the students.

Speaking at a function organised to inaugurate new premises of the SS Demo College of Commerce & Economics at the integrated educational complex, Cujira, near the city, last night, he said, ”There is a demand of many states to allow detention in somewhere otherwise everybody goes up to class IX and after that there would be a dropout. We can’t waste our generations like this and, therefore, we have decided that we will allow states to decide to detain the students after giving fair chance at class V and and VIII.”

Mr Javadekar said that teacher education was also being reformed completely.

”We are reforming teacher education completely. BEd and DEd institutions which are not doing good job will be shut down. I have asked for affidavits. Already 6,500 have come while 6,500 have not given. I have served them a show-cause notice why they should not be discontinued,” he said.

Stressing that the community support was required for improving education in the country, he said, ”Community support must be revived. I am formulating new rules. If schools will be constructed in villages by the Government then compound of the wall will be constructed by the villagers. If five rooms will be constructed by the Government, then two rooms will be constructed by villagers. This needs to be done and I am sure people will accept it.”

”Even it is the wish of the poor that their children get good education. And therefore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government’s slogan is ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. The same way we are moving ahead with good education to all. Thrust is on quality of education,” the Minister said.

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was not for showing somebody low but an attempt to introduce healthy competition, he said, adding, there was a need to have separate category for small universities. (AGENCIES)
