Kupwara Army camp attack : Three Army men martyred, 2 militants gunned down

 

Srinagar : Terrorists on Thursday morning attacked an Army camp in Panzgam area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

According to initial reports, at least two militants have been neutralised in the ongoing encounter with the security forces

  • “Fidayeen terrorists attacked the Panzgam army camp close to the Line of Control (LoC) around 4.30 a.m.” Defence Ministry Spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia told IANS. “The three soldiers killed, included a captain and a non-commissioned officer (NGO),” the spokesman added.
  • While the firing has stopped, search operation is still underway.
  • One Army major, along with two jawans, are believed to be killed in the encounter. An official statement, however, is still awaited.
  • Two more militants are believed to be hiding.
  • Five jawans injured at the army camp have been rushed to Srinagar where they are being provided medical assistance.
  • The terrorists attacked the army installation, an artillery base that was deployed close the LoC, at around 4 am this morning, say media reports.
  • A heavy gunbattle between security forces and terrorists is underway and a search operation is likely to be initiated.
  • This is reportedly said to be a suicide attack where the terrorists came to dealt maximum damage to the Indian Army forces.

The attack comes a day after it was reported that around 150 militants are waiting near the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to sneak into the Valley.

Lt Gen J S Sandhu, Commander of Srinagar-based 15 Corps which is responsible for security of the Kashmir valley, said there would be more militants at the launching pads in PoK in the areas facing Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu province. (Agencies)
