5 yrs RI to husband after 14 yrs long trial, investigation

JAMMU, May 21: In a dowry death case, 1st Additional Sessions Judge Jammu Y P Bourney today awarded five years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 30,000 to husband of the deceased for abetment to suicide while as father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law of the deceased were acquitted of the charges leveled against them.
According to the prosecution case, on August 12, 1999 an information was received from PCR Jammu that a woman Anju Sharma, wife of Vinod Kumar was admitted in Government Medical College and Hospital after having consumed some poisonous substance. On this information, one ASI was deputed to the hospital. However by the time he reached the hospital the woman had expired.
Since, it was a case of unnatural death of a young bride under suspicious circumstances within one year of her marriage proceedings under Section 174 CrPC were initiated. On the same day Madan Lal, father of deceased lodged a written report mentioning that his daughter was being subjected to harassment by her in-laws for having not brought adequate dowry.
After completion of investigation police presented challan against all the accused persons namely Vinod Kumar, mother-in-law Tripta Devi, sister-in-law Vijay Kumari and father-in-law Yashpal.
After hearing APP Harpal Singh for the State whereas Advocate OP Sharma with Advocate Rohit Sharma for the accused persons, Court acquitted father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law of the charges leveled against them and awarded four years imprisonment and fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 306 RPC and one year RI and fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 498-A CrPC to the husband of the deceased.
