NEW DELHI, Nov 10: About 5300 families of Displaced Persons (DPs) from PoJK of 1947, now settled outside J&K, under the banner of Mirpur Balidan Samiti, New Delhi, have demanded justice for these aggrieved DPs.
In a press statement a spokesman of the Samiti, M M Gupta said that during November, 1947 thousands of Hindus and Sikhs from Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Gilgit, Baltistan etc (Now called PoJK) were killed by Pakistan Army disguised as Kabailees; women were kidnapped and raped. Those survived reached Jammu. The then State Government allowed to settle some of them in Jammu and rest about 5300 families were forcibly sent out of the State due to political reasons. The then State Government and Union Government instead of giving any relief, made several cruel jokes subsequently with them. Many of them have now been settled in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttaranchal, West Bengal etc.
Some of the above mentioned families after a few years were allotted house in resettlement colonies, the payment of which was adjusted out of Rs 3500 granted ex-gratia to them. Subsequently, they have not been given any kind of relief or package or compensation of any kind.
The Governments then publicized a false narrative that the above mentioned 5300 families had opted to settled outside J&K, therefore, their citizenship of J&K was also forfeited. Some of these displaced persons after hard struggle managed to obtain a State Subject from the Government of J&K which proved to be just a piece of paper which had no value because they were not given any kind of rights like Displaced Persons settled in J&K.
The Govt of India sanctioned Rs 2000 crore Under PM’s Relief Package for displaced families from PoJK of 1947. Each family was paid Rs. 5.5 lakhs but these 5300 families were neglected. Despite High Court orders, the Government has remained silent over the issue.
Mirpur Balidan Bhawan Samiti, Delhi has appealed to the Union Government and the Govt of Jammu & Kashmir to provide justice to these 5300 families.
