Keep Jammu clean

Sir,
The article “Waste free canals in Jammu” by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat published in this paper on Nov 26 was quite informative and eye opener for Jammu people. Water bodies in Jammu especially Tawi and other canals  as the author has said have become a dumping site of all the garbage and filth . It is the duty of Irrigation and Flood Control Department to clean all the canals in Jammu. Local residents also have a role to play as we cannot always blame civic bodies and administration for all the mess. People should abstain from dumping temple flowers and other household waste in Tawi and local canals as this causes serious health problems. The Jammu Municipal Corporation and Irrigation & Flood Control Department should process all the waste that is generated in Jammu city by various scientific techniques. Tons of organic waste generated in Narwal Mandi on daily basis is also dumped in Tawi river. This organic waste can be converted into bio fertilizer or compost by the Agriculture / Horticulture Department through various agencies as Govt of India already has a scheme for creating composting units in fruit / vegetable mandis. For each such unit Govt of India provides Rs 1.90 crores to state Governments / Departments. Unfortunately we do not have even single such unit in J&K
Let us pledge to keep our city neat and clean.

Sir,
The article is not only informative but raises issues, which requires immediate attention. Water bodies of an area, are its life lines but the tragedy of the day, they are becoming dumping sites. What to talk of the urban areas even the situation in rural areas is not very good. No doubt, there are funds for the specific purpose, but without any vision they are of no use. Mention of Ankit Agarwal,  an entrepreneur from U.P who with  his organization  Help Us Green playing an important role in converting  solid waste put into Ganga into Organic Manure, Incense and other useful things deserves appreciation.  He is an inspiration for all of us and suggests every problem has a solution. Need of the hour, is to take inspiration and we all should work for the preservation of our natural resources.

Sir,
The article is quite informative and it sounds like a wake up call for Jammuites to be a socially as well as morally responsible in managing the waste on the principles of SLWM Rules,2016 . The author has mentioned that no steps have been taken up by Rural Development  Department in managing waste on rural areas. Pertaining to this, I would like to bring in your kind notice that in  Jammu   district a Pilot project is functional in village Chak Lala panchayat Sehoura of block Bishnah as Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM)Centre  since Feburary 2017 with a capacity to cater five hundred households on self sustainable basis.Similary another project is ready to be started soon in Barda Kalan panchayat of block Akhnoor Distt Jammu.Your suggestions with regard to above projects are welcome.
