Srinagar, Sept 26: Curfew like restrictions in parts of Srinagar and shutdown in Valley paralysed life for 80th consecutive day today while police arrested 55 people on charges of stone pelting and creating trouble.
Restrictions continued in three Police Station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta and Khanyar -with hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel deployed in these areas since morning. There was heavy deployment of security forces in other areas of the Old City.
In Civil Lines and uptown areas of Srinagar, moderate movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes and banks were closed.
The train services between Banihal and Baramulla and pre-paid mobile services and mobile internet services continue to remain suspended.
In the evening, stone-throwing clashes erupted at many Old City localities including Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, Khankhah-e-Moulla, Safa Kadal, Bhori Kadal and Noor Bagh during which security forces fired teargas and pepper gas to foil these protests.
Clashes erupted at Soura area of city here this evening after police attempted to arrest few people wanted for unrest. Residents came out and protested against the police raid. Police fired teargas shelling at Sabzi Mandi, leading to clashes.
Clashes erupted at Goriwan area of Bijbehara and Mazhama in Budgam district of Central Kashmir.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, situation remained normal and peaceful throughout the Valley today.
The statement said that during the day, greater movement of vehicular traffic was observed in the Valley including the Srinagar city.
It said 55 miscreants were arrested during past 24 hours from various parts of the Valley who are wanted in various offences of creating disruptions in normalcy.
Police said that four miscreants involved in pelting stones on the civilian vehicles and injuring the civilians including some Hajis returning to their homes after completion of Haj pilgrimage on National Highway at Singhpora.
“On 25th Sept 2016, at about 1900 hours, while the normal flow of traffic was going on at Srinagar-Baramulla Highway , some stone pelters attacked few vehicles at Singhpora Pattan, resulting injuries to some people boarding the vehicles. Among injured were some Hajis returning to their homes after completion of Haj pilgrimage”, police said.
Police statement said: “Police immediately swung into action and arrested four stone pelters involved in the crime. They were identified as Ishfaq Waza son of Faruq resident of Bagwan Pora Singhpora, Aamir Ganie son of Khair Ganie resident of Hartrath, Umar Din Bhat son of Abdul Ahad resident of Bagwanpora and Munir Bhat son of Munzur resident of Singhpora. Case FIR No. 248/2016 under Sections 148, 149, 336, 332, 307 and 427 RPC has been registered in Police Station Pattan in this regard. Efforts are on to arrest more miscreants involved in this incident who are still at large.”
