Highest casualties reported from Jammu, Kathua, Srinagar

JAMMU, Oct 8: In 4,165 accidents, 499 of which were fatal and 3,666 non-fatal, that have been reported in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir up to August 2023, a high number of 580 people have lost their lives, and 5,565 others have suffered injuries.
In the preceding year, i.e., 2022, a total of 805 people died and 8,372 were injured in 6,092 road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per current year’s data available with the Excelsior, highest 134 people have died and 900 injured in road accidents in the Jammu District followed by 58 people dying and 476 receiving injuries in Kathua District and 43 people losing their lives and 333 receiving injuries upto August 2023.
The other districts where the number of people died and getting injured in road accidents is high are South Kashmir’s Anantnag District with 38 casualties and 286 injuries, Udhampur District with 30 casualties and a high 498 injuries, border Rajouri District with 30 deaths and 336 injuries, Samba District with 30 deaths and 243 injuries, Reasi District with 29 casualties and 350 injuries. 13 people have died and 200 have been injured in Poonch Town in the first eight months of 2023.
In the hilly Doda District, 23 people have died and 220 have been injured in road accidents up to August 2023, whereas 24 casualties with 96 injuries have been reported from Kishtwar District, and 21 casualties with 217 injuries have been reported from Ramban District in this period.
If a month-wise breakdown of the people died in the accidents is analysed, the highest number, 94 people, died in May this year, followed by 89 in July, 75 in March, 74 in June, 69 in August, 66 in February, 59 in April, and 54 in January this year.
As far as challaning figures are concerned, 93,302 people were challaned by City Srinagar, Rural Kashmir, City Jammu, Rural Jammu, and NHW Ramban police, followed by 105,117 people challaned in February this year, 126,923 in March, 102,878 in April, and 142,206 people challaned in May this year.
